How to Save Money on Your Heating Bill - Berenz Home Inspections

How to save money on your heating bill.

27℉ on Thanksgiving!!  BRRRR  It’s cold out there!!  Looks like we are just in time to blog about some inexpensive ways for you to consider when saving money on your energy costs this year.  So shake out those extra blankets, pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa and read below as not only will these helpful suggestions keep you a little bit warmer this winter, it will also put some extra money back in your pockets.

  1. Use ceiling fans to your advantage. If you have ceiling fans in your home, use them strategically to achieve better airflow: counter-clockwise will push hot air up in the summer and clockwise will trap heat inside to keep your rooms warmer during cooler months. Turn your ceiling fan on a low setting to gently push hot air back down.
  2. Turn it Down...Adjust the thermostat at night. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save about 10 percent per year on your heating bills by turning your thermostat down 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours. Consider investing in flannel sheets and a warm comforter for your bed and keeping your home cooler when you .
  3. Set it and FORGET IT with a programmable thermostat!!  You could save up to 10 percent on your heating bill by programming your thermostat to be at a lower temperature at night and after you leave for work. However, it's recommended that you don't reduce the temperature more than about 6 - 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Lower your water heating costs.  Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm setting (120°F). You'll not only save energy, you'll avoid scalding your hands.
  5. Keep your furnace clean and unblocked. Keeping your furnace and vents properly maintained will reduce energy consumption and help you save. Check your furnace filter monthly, and replace it when it gets dirty.
  6. Don’t Block Air Vents.  Keep supply and return air vents clear of furniture and appliances so your HVAC system can work more efficiently.
  7. Keep the cold outside where it belongs….Invest in insulation. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs are lost each year due to escaping heat in homes without proper insulation. The majority of heat loss is through the attic.  Check to make sure you have enough insulation. Not sure?  Contact BHI360 at 631.291.7779 to determine the R-Value.  You can also start with foam weather stripping for your doors and windows; it's cheap and is extremely easy to apply.
  8. Find and Seal Leaks.  Seal the air leaks around utility cut-throughs for pipes ('plumbing penetrations'), gaps around chimneys and recessed lights in insulated ceilings, and unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets.  Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around leaky doors and windows.
  9. Make the holidays a little more jolly by saving money and decorate with LED lights. LED lights use at least 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than older, incandescent lighting. Not only do they consume less energy, LED lights don't emit as much heat and are more resistant to breakage, making them a safer alternative. Bonus tip: Always unplug your holiday lights before going to bed or leaving the house. As with all appliances and electronics, your holiday lights will continue to draw power even when not in use, which adds unnecessary expense to utility bills.
  10. Let the sun shine in….Open those drapes: Let the sunshine do some of the work and allow it to heat your house, for free. Close them back up at night to help insulate.
